The Way It Should Be!

Community Supported Agriculture (aka Veggie Box)

What is a CSA?
Otherwise known as a Community Supported Agriculture. A CSA is essentially a farm share. Like Uber, Airbnb or a co-op, this is a sharing economy concept where the community and a local farm/s work together to support one-another. The community consists of individuals or families like yours that support the farm in the Spring and in return receive a bountiful selection of fresh, seasonal produce every week. Shares purchased before the start of the growing season allow Nate’s Farm to focus on growing the highest-quality fruits and vegetables for your family members all summer long.
How do the Veggie Boxes work?
Our CSA is called Veggie Box. Veggie Box members will make an investment into the farm for an entire season of produce upfront. This early payment program allows Nate’s Farm to plan and finance for the upcoming 2017 season.  Since this is my first season, there is a lot of basic infrastructure (season extension, walk-in cooler, harvest and post-harvest equipment) that needs to be purchased and/or built. Growing food is an ongoing process and your dollars will be put to good use each year to purchase seeds, replace/repair equipment, etc. A typical Veggie Box includes 5-10 different types of vegetables (approx. 7-10 lbs), enough to feed a family of 3-4
What’s in it for you?
A CSA is based on shared risk: When you choose a CSA, you choose to invest in the entire growing season. This includes all the ups and downs that come with operating a farm. The rewards of a bountiful season will overflow to the weekly Veggie Box, but the trials and losses will also be shared by all CSA members, not just the farmer alone.  This allows Nate’s Farm to learn as it grows and weather the dry spells. All of us sharing in the risk and success of the season together helps to create a sense of community between the Veggie Box family members and myself.  We are all in this together!
Who should join a CSA + Why does it work?
If you are reading this, you are an excellent CSA candidate. A CSA is comprised of individuals and families who are seeking better options for fresh nutritious veggies. Individuals like yourself who are eager and want to help support their community and local economy.  Hungry Localvores who are willing to take a risk in the future growth of their local food movement with the added benefit of knowing their farmer and where their families’ food is grown. This system works because we are depending on each other for success.
How am I going to do this?
With finances available before the start of the growing season, I will have the ability to carefully plan and organize an intensive crop production schedule. It is not a simple task determining what to grow, how much to grow and when to grow certain produce.  Interlacing a detailed garden plan and CSA funding early in the season will allow me to focus on the day to day tasks of planting and harvesting in the July sun. A goal without a plan is just a wish, but fortunately, I’ve got all 3 and a supportive community to top it off!
